Position Summary
In support of Morehouse School of Medicine’s Vision; “Leading the creation and advancement of health equity,” the Department of Surgery is seeking Physicians to join their team.
The Department of Surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine ( MSM ) is recruiting a Director of Surgical Outcomes within its Research Division to lead a wide range of research initiatives to improve the delivery of health services and, ultimately, the outcomes for MSM surgical patients. The Surgery Research Division is focused on fostering a robust research environment that encourages our faculty, scientists, and learners to pursue research that alters the future of surgery.
This position will provide management and support the growth of the Surgical Outcomes Research Program of the Department of Surgery Research Division. The Surgical Outcomes Research Program is a Department of Surgery research endeavor to advance the collaborative study of surgical care processes, surgical outcomes, and the provision of health services through a multidisciplinary approach. Under the direction of the Chair, the Director will collaborate with MSM clinician investigators from all departments and service lines on various retrospective and patient outcomes research studies. In addition to management and administrative responsibilities, this candidate will assist clinical investigators in developing research programs to secure external funding from government, foundation, and industry sources.
The successful candidate is expected to manage multiple clinical projects effectively. This encompasses protocol design, IRB submission, research team coordination, data collection, statistical analysis, and manuscript writing.
Job Duties:
Provide study design and biostatistical support services to assist surgeons in building research capacity.
Maintain a database to empower surgeons and collaborators to utilize large datasets, assist users with complying with all training and regulatory requirements for those datasets*, and streamline the research process by preparing analysis-ready data extracts.
Maintain a server equipped with statistical software that can be used to securely analyze data from any source and is compliant with MSM policies, laws, and regulations.
Provide expertise in study design, database analysis, biostatistical methods, and artificial intelligence.
Partner with surgeons, residents, and medical students to analyze research ideas and hypotheses in various research areas/sub-specialties.
Utilize large data sets through programs such as NSQIP and other CMS databases.
Reviews and analyzes resulting research data and revises techniques or approaches to work problems as indicated as necessary by research data.
Draft and submit project results to external and internal audiences.
Prepare or assist in preparing research papers, reports, and abstracts for publication.
Design, develop, or adapt methodologies to obtain results.
Prepare and deliver presentations at national and international conferences to large audiences.
Confer with industrial, governmental, or other groups concerning the progress or results of the research project.
Lead project teams, define project scope and deliverables, and ensure alignment of stakeholder requirements.
Provide frequent, effective communication to internal teams and external stakeholders about project scope, timelines, and potential risks through briefings, presentations, conference calls, and emails.
Ensure that supported clinical research studies are appropriately designed, analyzed, and interpreted.
Recommend and implement strategies to improve workflow and quality of projects.
Collaborate with clinical investigators to develop research programs focused on securing external funding and perform a lead role in developing and writing relevant sections of grant proposals and manuscripts.
Mentor statisticians, residents, and fellows in clinical research principles.
Provide a centralized service to support the computational needs of researchers within the Surgery Department.
Minimum Qualifications
PhD degree in Statistics or a related field with formal training in research methods and statistical analysis.
Experience working with surgeon investigators.
Experience with multiple deadlines, including grant submissions.
Comprehensive knowledge of policies about research studies, including ethics committee approvals ( IRB ) and data use/sharing collaboration ( DUA / DSA )
General knowledge of the principles of clinical research design and statistical analysis.
Strong statistical programming skills using SAS or other statistical software.
Demonstrated history of peer-reviewed publications.
Experience with large data sets and qualitative research is required.
Excellent organizational and administrative skills and exceptional oral and written communication skills
Ability to work independently with limited oversight.

It is MSM’s Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are required to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID -19 prior to commencement of employment. If employment will commence during Flu Season, MSM requires all individuals to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless granted an exemption. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain an exemption from MSM will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
