Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Lead Medical Technologist performs all phases of clinical laboratory work including those requiring the exercise of independent judgment; he/she also oversees the technical functions of a section of the laboratory. The work performed will be in one or more of the major disciplines, those being chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, microbiology, serology and urinalysis. Performs activities associated with actual test performances, such as quality control, quality assurance, instrument maintenance and result interpretation. Ensures the quality of all phases of work from specimen collection to result reporting and limited interpretation.

  • Oversees the quality control activities for the technical section(s), ensuring that these activities are complete, accurately filled out, and performed and reported in a timely manner.

  • Ensures that all preventive maintenance and instrument performance checks are performed and recorded according to schedule.

  • Demonstrates good knowledge concerning techniques and theory in all areas of the laboratory.

  • ·Performs tests accurately and precisely according to written policies and procedures and established practices.

  • Learns and adapts well to new instrumentation and techniques.

  • Helps train new employees or those with less experience in a technical area.

  • Participates in providing in service education for the laboratory and other hospital personnel.

  • Ensures that all QC functions needed for the shift are performed.

Job Qualifications

Experience

· 2 years experience in a laboratory performing high complexity testing

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related field from an accredited university or college OR

  • Graduation from a clinical rotation or internship in an accredited medical technology program or a 50-week military training course or an acceptable equivalent which results in eligibility to take the registry exam in Medical Technology (Clinical Laboratory Science). Alternate degree hours or programs must have certification in ASCP, NCA, or AMT

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registration as a MT by ASCP, NCA,or AMT within 1 year of hire Required
