About the Department

The Student Wellness Center (SW) is a part of the Student Health and Counseling Services organization within Campus and Student Life. SW provides mental health care to eligible students and their eligible dependents. Mental health services include: diagnostic assessments; crisis assessment and intervention; individual, couples, and/or group psychotherapy; medication management; academic skills counseling; and referral services. SW staff provides consultation to University of Chicago faculty, staff, and administrators, and outreach/education to the campus community. In its care for students, SW employs a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians, supports a psychology training program, and serves as a training rotation site for psychiatry residents.

Job Summary

Provides routine and emergent psychiatric care to University of Chicago students and consults with Student Wellness (SW) staff in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to include identification and management of mental health problems. Maintains a collaborative consultation relationship with and reports to the SW Chief Psychiatrist. Conducts comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, prescribes psychiatric medications as indicated, orders and interprets laboratory studies as indicated, and provides psychiatric follow-up care. Participates in after-hours call rotation.

Provides formal and informal consultation to SW clinical staff and trainees. Responds to campus crises. Follows SW policies and procedures consistent with state mental health statues, ethical guidelines, best practices, HIPAA, and FERPA. Maintains accurate and timely documentation for all clinical interactions and consultations. Provides campus-based services and consultation to internal and external constituents, which may necessitate being on campus in the evening or over the weekend. Participates in SW peer review and quality improvement activities. Attends multi-disciplinary case conferences and prescriber meetings. Serves on SW committees as assigned. Actively pursues required knowledge and skills for professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Provides routine and emergent psychiatric care to University of Chicago students in collaboration with consulting physician and consults with multidisciplinary Student Wellness (SW) staff in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to include identification and management of mental health problems.
  • Conducts comprehensive psychiatric evaluations; prescribes psychiatric medications as indicated; orders and interprets laboratory studies as indicated; provides psychiatric follow-up care.
  • Utilizes evidenced-based and quality care guidelines to patient care management.
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation for all clinical interactions and consultations.
  • Participates in after-hours call rotation.
  • Provides formal and informal consultation to SW clinical staff and trainees.
  • Attends and participates in multi-disciplinary treatment team, student counseling, psychiatry staff meetings, and other meetings as required.
  • Provides campus-based services and consultation to internal and external constituents, which may necessitate being on campus in the evening or during the weekend.
  • Participates in SW peer review and quality improvement activities.
  • Interprets assessments, treatments, outcomes, work and disability status, and screenings in a thorough manner. Maintains clear and concise records for individual and corporate clients to meet the requirements of the department, the company and any applicable standa ds or laws.
  • Participates in counseling patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance. Interprets patient\'s condition quickly and concisely and determine the best course of treatment. This can include ordering appropriate laboratory or imaging studies, discussing patient with the Emergency Physician and/or referring patient to consultants.
  • Preforms other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and training in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

Master\'s degree or higher from an accredited school of nursing appropriate as a Nurse Practitioner and certified in area of specialty.
