POSITION PURPOSE:

The Infection Preventionist for the Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) that includes Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Central Community Hospital, and Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville is responsible for implementing and coordinating the program of infection control, prevention, and surveillance in the inpatient and outpatient settings that has been approved by the CAH's Infection Control Committee. The Infection Preventionist may consult with the Chairman of the Infection Control Committee at Mercy Medical Center- Dubuque as needed. The Infection Preventionist detects and analyzes the distribution of infectious disease, both potential and real, affecting all age groups within the hospital environment, and implements the appropriate control measures as set forth by regulatory bodies, and the CAH's Infection Control Committee. The Infection Preventionist has administrative authority to institute infection control measures when there is reasonably felt to be a danger to patients or associates, until such a time as advice can be obtained from a provider of the CAH's Medical Staff. This individual is also responsible for reviewing and formulating policy or organizational changes and making recommendations for final approval by the CAH's department director and Executive Team.

What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required.

  • Master of Science in Nursing preferred.

  • Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Iowa.

  • Current Infection Control Certification required, or obtained within 4 years of hire.

  • Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 5 years thereafter.

  • Minimum two (2) years hospital or public health experience.

  • Experience in epidemiological principles of infectious disease; and sterilization, sanitation and disinfection practices.

  • Knowledge in education principles, patient care practice, and performance improvement concepts and tools.

  • Working knowledge of federal, state, Joint Commission, and other external agency regulations.

  • Current driver's license.

  • Maintains a professional, collaborative work environment so as to foster a positive public image for the CAHs.

  • Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information (i.e. HIPAA, Stark, etc.).

  • Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of the CAHs.

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to relate to people across all levels & diverse backgrounds; ability to handle interactions with discretion, tact & courtesy.

  • Promotes a continuous performance improvement effort to enhance the service provided by demonstrating positive attitudes and positive actions through a display of courtesy, congeniality, cooperation, sensitivity and professionalism.

  • Exhibits knowledge, skills and abilities required to support compliance with age appropriate needs of population served.

  • Demonstrates behaviors consistent with identified competencies and job requirements.

  • Exhibits sound judgment, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills.

  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Communicates effectively with members of the health care team.

  • Compiles information; keeps records, prepares or directs preparation of reports and correspondence.

  • Must be able to use a computer for documentation and other relevant activities. Familiarity with computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GroupWise), HealthStream, internet/intranet preferred; and use of reporting tools. Helpful to have experience with Cerner Power Chart, EPIC, and an incident reporting system such as VOICE, etc.
