About the Opportunity

The Application Configuration Analyst A works at FirstEnergy's Transmission Control Center with a team of analysts and engineers in support of the Energy Management System (EMS) and other related applications. The system is a critical, real-time, 7x24 application that monitors and controls the flow of power across the FirstEnergy transmission system and interconnections.

This position’s base reporting location can be Akron, OH or Fairmont, WV. The position can be worked primarily remotely with occasional (1-2 days/week) work on-site.

Team members apply software, hardware, networking, and/or engineering principles to support FirstEnergy’s EMS environment. The work focuses on maintaining a system architecture that meets the end-user requirements, while maintaining compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Understanding the business functions to provide optimal solutions that are scalable, reliable, and cost effective.

  • Managing third-party vendor software on FirstEnergy's standard infrastructure and network platforms.

  • Managing the testing and deployment of patches and software upgrades.

  • Supporting real-time SCADA software and database configurations

  • Maintaining integrations and interfaces between FirstEnergy real-time systems

  • Performing system security administration tasks

  • Supporting GE’s Historian and Source products and Oracle databases

  • Supporting data extraction and transformation through the GE toolset and Perl scripts.

  • Developing data queries and reporting solutions to meet customer requirements.

  • Supporting enhanced visualization projects for FirstEnergy's transmission control rooms

  • Supporting GE’s Control product running on the EMS Front End Processors (FEP) and associated communications hardware.

  • Developing a solid understanding of processes in the FirstEnergy Transmission Operations line of business, keeping up with developments in the electric utility industry at large, and being able to speak the language of the business.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar technical discipline.

  • Solid computer skills with competency in Microsoft Office products (particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

  • Computer programming ability, including SQL and Perl scripting.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels and with varying backgrounds.

  • Detail-oriented, accurate, and able to understand and interpret complex technical information.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and plan work, work on multiple concurrent tasks, and meet deadlines.

  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours and be available for call-in and after-hours support (7x24 operations) as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with relevant utility operations (transmission, distribution, generation)

  • Familiarity with client/server environments

  • Experience with real-time system databases.

  • Data communications and networking knowledge

  • Demonstrated analytical skills to effectively resolve technical problem
