Summary

CHS has an exciting opportunity within our Transportation Division to lead our Enterprise Health and Safety function for all transportation modes. The Sr. Director of Employee Health and Safety (EHS) is responsible for ensuring that all Company activities involving transportation via highway, rail, vessel, ocean, or barge are conducted in strict compliance with all applicable federal, state, provincial, and local requirements.

This position will serve as the leader of a center of excellence supporting the CHS core value of safety by developing, maintaining, and measuring best in class processes that focus on compliance, training, fleet operations and safety for our employees, customers, and the motoring public. The individual will work closely with the Sr. Director of EHS responsible for facilities and the people who manage them. CHS operates in a matrix organization.

Responsibilities

  • Championing and fostering a strong safety culture for the movement of products for CHS with emphasis on the highway fleet following all safety policies, procedures, and regulations.

  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and Provincial regulations pertaining to transportation rules. Review new and/or amended regulations, obtain clarifications, and provide guidance documents to applicable company employees and operational groups.

  • Leading a center lead team of specialists managing DOT driver files, compliance, regulatory programs, training, and fleet operations for all modes of transportation.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable motor carrier safety regulations as it pertains to driver and vehicle management. Programs include hours of service, driver qualifications, controlled substance and alcohol testing, training, and vehicle management.

  • Investigate, source and gain approval where needed of tools and products that can streamline and/or facilitate daily operations.

  • Identify, communicate, and seek assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions to enable products to be moved by trained professionals safely through the network regardless of mode.

  • Lead the planning, development, and implementation of working groups, systems, auditing standards, practices, communications, and initiatives, that efficiently address compliance and quantify and manage the EHS risks and goals of the business with a heavy focus on Department of Transportation regulations and compliance.

  • Providing strategic leadership as an EHS leader working collaboratively with members of compliance, legal, learning and development, and the business to manage risk and continuously improve EHS systems and processes.

  • Ensuring proper safety measurements are developed and implemented to track key performance indicators and facilitate continuous improvement processes.

  • Act as a representative of CHS, within Industry Groups and trade associations.

  • Advise senior leadership and operational management, ensuring leadership knows and understands the impact of decisions on EHS.

Minimum Qualifications (required)

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety

  • 10+ years of proven experience working in environmental health and safety supporting truck transportation.

  • Prior leadership experience with advancing level of leadership responsibilities.

Additional Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in environmental, Health and Safety Management or similar

  • CSP and or CHMM certification

  • ASSP Global Safety Management Certificate or ASSP Risk Assessment Certificate preferred.

  • Extensive knowledge of Federal, State and Provincial transportation regulations under all modes of transportation.

  • Working knowledge of applicable worker protection rules and regulations.

  • Experience working with regulatory compliance agencies.

  • Working in a matrix organization

  • Environmental, health and safety experience in the Agriculture or Oil industry preferred

Physical Requirements

CHS offers a competitive total rewards package. Compensation includes base wage and, depending upon position, may include other earnings such as bonus, incentives and commissions. Actual pay offered will vary based on multiple factors which may include, without limitation, experience, education, training, specialized skills and certifications.
