Job Description:

85% - Conduct research tasks for PSXL projects

  • Independently perform and manage laboratory tasks involving all aspects of protein production including construct design, cloning, protein expression testing, protein purification and quality analysis.

  • Independent design and execution of protein crystallization experiments, preparation of samples for X-ray diffraction data collection and computational methods ranging from data processing to structure solution.

5% - Laboratory operations

  • Manage the daily operations of the PSXL protein production and structural biology tasks. This includes maintaining the inventory of consumable supplies, preparing stock solutions for crystallization, general laboratory cleanliness, introducing users to the laboratory guidelines and providing training to users in the area of protein crystallization.

  • Providing expert advice to the PSXL Director and senior staff members regarding areas to improve/enhance the laboratory’s capabilities.

5% - Documentation/Analysis

  • Preparation and analysis of scientific research materials for experiments performed in the PSXL.

  • Devising research methods and plans for carrying out protein purification and structural biology tasks.

  • Maintaining detailed notes and records pertaining to all research work.

  • Writing detailed final reports for collaborator’s projects.

  • Communicate with collaborators of the PSXL regarding their projects.

  • In some cases co-author publications of research results.

5% - Training

  • Provide training to junior researchers such as graduate students and post-docs in the methods utilized for protein production and structural biology methods.

Required Qualifications:

  1. A doctorate in structural biology, biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, chemistry or related field OR a Master’s degree in structural biology, biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, chemistry or related field and 3 years of experience in any of these areas of research.

Position Overview:

The Protein Structure and X-ray Crystallography Laboratory (PSXL) is a core laboratory that focuses on the 3-dimensional structure determination of proteins, using X-ray crystallography and CryoEM, for collaborators’ projects and extramurally funded research projects managed by the PSXL Director. As such, the PSXL manages all tasks in the structure determination process including initial construct design, assistance with protein purification, crystallization, X-ray diffraction data collection, structure solution/refinement and structure analysis. The position will involve performing laboratory tasks necessary to express and purify protein samples as well as setup and monitoring of crystallization experiments and computational crystallography, depending on experience, for collaborator’s projects in the KU research community along with external collaborators.
