The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is currently seeking a full time Manager, Research Laboratory to work in Miami. The Manager, Research Laboratory manages the day-to-day operations of the research laboratory, to include maintenance and upkeep, in order to ensure an efficient and effective lab working environment. Formulates and implements short and long range goals for the operation of the laboratories. Develops, implements, monitors and evaluates systems to evaluate current and projected laboratory services and productivity of the lab; implements laboratory policies and procedures and coordinates with research staff on issues which impact laboratory services. Serves as a liaison between investigators, research personnel and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities. Advises on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintains conformance with specific operational standards; evaluates and recommends new techniques and/or technologies. Maintains quality checks on safety of laboratories and insures maintenance of the facilities according to good laboratory practices; develops and implements quality assurance programs relating to calibration and maintenance of equipment.

Manages and coordinates the activities of a project(s) with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and resources. Installs and maintains laboratory equipment in compliance with federal regulations. Assures that the laboratory technicians are properly trained in standard operating procedures and equipment specific requirements. Assists in the determination of fiscal requirements and in the preparation of budgetary recommendations. Compiles and prepares reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations and conclusions.

  • Molecular biology techniques: plasmid cloning, PCR, ddPCR, making and running gels, Western blots, ELISA, immunoprecipitation.

  • Cell biology techniques: cell electroporation, cell transfection, cell surface antibody labeling, flow cytometry, dual-luciferase assays, preparation of DNA and RNA for deep sequencing.

  • RNA techniques: RNA in vitro transcription, reverse transcription, RNA labeling.

  • HIV work: Preparing HIV stock virus from transfected cell lines, titering HIV, challenging primary cells with HIV, challenging humanized mice with HIV via IP injection, collection of mouse blood containing HIV, quantification of viremia by qRT-PCR/ddPCR, flow cytometry, and ELISA.

  • Recombinant virus techniques: Lentiviral packaging, harvesting and purification of lentivirus, transduction of lentivirus, transduction of AAV.

  • Sterile tissue culture techniques for cell lines and primary cells.

  • Cell isolation from blood and tissues.

  • Mouse work: including injections (retro-orbital, IP, IV, intrahepatic of neonatal mice), surgical procedures, blood collections (retro-orbital, tail-vein, and cardiac puncture), necropsies, harvesting of tissues and cells, post-mortem tissue staining.

  • Radiation work: whole-body irradiation of mice prior to engraftment with human cells.

  • Daily monitoring of health of mice and progress of mouse experiments.

  • Data collection and analysis using Excel, Prism Graph-Pad, R, FlowJo (or similar), Image J (or similar), SnapGene (or Vector NTI or similar), Paperpile, EndNote, and other specialized software.

  • Familiarity with software tools for the design of CRISPR guide RNAs and the computational analysis of CRISPR-mediated gene editing efficacy (CRISPick, ICE, CRISPRESSO, etc.)

  • Presentation of data in weekly meetings.

  • Preparation of data figures and help in writing manuscripts.

  • Managing responsibilities: ordering reagents, supplies, and equipment.

  • Preparation of shared reagents and solutions (e.g., competent bacterial cells, cell lines, buffers, transfection reagents).

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
