Sutter Health SMU-Graphic Designer in Oakland, California
Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Graphic Designer provides graphic design services and counsel for printed and electronic outreach in support of student recruitment, fundraising, alumni relations, and institutional advancement. This position functions within the Office of Communications, a team that works collaboratively with a number of University units and outside service providers.
The position will use graphic design acumen to produce a full range of simple to complex materials, both printed and electronic. This position will utilize and/or develop creative briefs in the preparation of proposed communications materials; verify that content conforms to printing and/or electronic publishing specifications, and may art direct photography and videography resources, as needed. In addition, the Graphic Designer will:
Under general supervision of the Director of Communications, design and coordinate the production of printed and electronic promotional communications to create awareness of and interest in Samuel Merritt University’s academic, fundraising, and alumni relations programs.
Coordinate and schedule vendor services in the preparation and production of final products. Perform press checks and approve final copy before the commencement of production runs.
Coordinate the design, production, and distribution of publications and electronic promotional communications, including advertisements, catalogs, brochures, flyers, signage, invitations, posters, A/V presentations, displays, exhibits, web-based outreach and images and graphics for use across social media channels, etc.
Coordinate appropriate use of campus and/or department logos and graphics, etc.
Use a customer service approach to accommodate changing dates, priorities, and styles.
Work in collaboration with internal clients to ensure needs are met.
Job Duties andAccountabilities: (all items listed below are considered “essential job functions” for ADA purposes).
Assist in the conceptualization, design, production, and printing of a variety of publications and electronic outreach tools in support of student recruitment, alumni relations, development programs, and institutional image to create awareness of and affinity for Samuel Merritt University:
Maintain and strengthen the University’s brandidentity and through the use of print and electronic materials developengaging content to achieve audience growth and to drive traffic tothe University website and social channels
Partnerwith Office of Admissions to market the University’s academic programsin print and through electronic/social channels
Partnerwith Office of Development and Alumni Affairs to assist in thecreation of effective outreach to increase donor and alumniengagement, including print and email campaigns to promote giving andattendance at events
Partnerwith other units of the University, including specific academicprograms, research units, community outreach offices, and internal andexternal efforts to engage the University’s many constituent groups.
Image Management and Archiving
Establish and assist in the management of a graphic asset archive to include but not be limited to photos, graphics, logos, video, and other assets to be used in promotion of the University through print and electronic outreach:
Take the lead inestablishing a digital asset repository and archive
Update and catalogcontent for Office of Communications and use by other University units

Skills and Abilities
In-depth experience and knowledge of higher education marketing and communications especially in support of student recruitment, alumni relations, and fundraising.
Follow brand guidelines and graphic standards.
Handle multiple small to large projects simultaneously.
Demonstrated experience and skill in interpersonal communications to facilitate open and effective communication, cooperation, and teamwork within and outside of one’s own team.
Demonstrated exceptional oral and written communication skills, including accurate English usage and exceptional proofreading and editing skills.
Strong skills in originating and maintaining photo, graphic, and video libraries.
Exceptional time/project management skills and ability to coordinate and establish production schedules, work both with the team and independently.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field.
At least 7 years senior design experience with extensive knowledge of the principles of print, typeface, color, layout, and production techniques.
Proficiency with graphic design software, including all facets of Adobe Creative Suite.
Thorough knowledge of communication principles, media, and marketing techniques.
Knowledge of marketing principles, concepts, techniques, and applications relevant to the field of promotion and advertising.
Ability to select and manage print vendors, mail houses, photographers, and illustrators for print and electronic projects.
Review all instructions and schedules with print vendors. Keep clients, key colleagues, and Communications Office leadership informed of any and all adjustments to delivery and costs.
