Sutter Health Pathologists Assistant - Per Diem in Palo Alto, California
Performs gross description and dissection of surgical tissue under the direction and supervision of a pathologist. Prepares tissue specimens for gross and microscopic examination, specimen accessioning, set-up for gross examination and tissue processing.
Selects and identify tissue for microscopic study
Determines proper fixative solutions in which tissue will be maintained.
Dictates gross findings on selected specimens using appropriate terminology
Refers complex tissue specimens to pathologist for review
Labels, store, and discard remaining wet tissue in accordance with standard operating procedures.Performs decalcification, frozen sections, and other intra-operative procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Trains and provides daily oversight of specimen accessioning and set-up for gross examination in histology
Provides initial training for new laboratory assistants and grossing technicians.
Ensures that all training documentation is complete and signed by the appropriate individuals
Update and revise training materials and documents as needed.
Assures accession accurancy of tissue specimens for gross examinationEnsures adequate supplies for gross examination of tissue specimens and frozen sections
REQUIRED: BS in Biological Science or related field; Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) as a Pathologists' Assistant within one (1) year of hire.
PREFERRED: previous experience assisting with gross description and dissection of surgical tissue
