Sutter Health Project Manager II in Palo Alto, California

Position Overview:

The Project Manager II is a key resource for projects across the organization. The Project Manager will require the necessary skills to assist and lead an organization in transition, including data retrieval and analysis with the ability to create meaningful metrics to prompt action/change within the organization.

The Project Manager will lead other organizational projects as assigned and will utilize the depth of organizational and systems skills to promote innovative solutions and stream-lined processes for new / evolving work flows, technology, etc. The Project Manager will establish effective working relationships with process owners and other stakeholders through ownership and effective communication.

The project manager may implement strategic priority projects designed and deployed to achieve the highest levels of quality, access and affordability. These projects are complex, highly visible, political in nature and involve multiple stakeholders. Using established project management tools and processes, efforts result in successful implementation of projects to produce improved organizational performance. This role may provide leadership, coaching/consulting, and facilitation skills to project team.


  • Documents standard work

  • Facilitates the development of the project plan(s) to ensure the priorities, project goals and objectives are accomplished within the prescribed timeframe and budget constraints

  • Leads the coordination of other support functions (Facilities, IT, etc.) during implementation

  • Manages / Oversees projects assigned

  • Ensures adherence to quality standards and achieve project deliverables

  • Communicates with project sponsor, steering committee and other stakeholders on a regular basis. PM has authority and responsibility for entire project cycle - initiate, plan, execute, control and close

  • Provides ongoing support for project teams. Act as a coach or mentor for teams.

  • Act as a champion for new ideas and innovations

  • Collects and analyze data, and develop meaningful metrics and training tools for improvement work.

  • Trains, empowers, and coaches leaders to support continuous improvement

  • Monitors process improvement work relative to plan

  • Thorough knowledge of health care delivery, current trends and strategies in healthcare, and quality improvement desired.

  • Knowledge of principles of Lean management systems and strategy deployment is desired.

  • Ability to gain cooperation and support through effective use of influence and persuasion desired.

  • High level of operational thinking and expertise with the ability to quickly analyze and understand healthcare operations desired.

  • Demonstrated ability to continuously learn and improve understanding of project methodology and tools.

  • Conceptual, analytical and negotiation skills are necessary, along with strong skills in solving complex problems and developing actionable recommendations.

  • Exceptional organizational skills with ability to handle multiple projects, multiple (and sometimes conflicting) priorities and adapt to a rapidly changing environment involving multiple stakeholders at various levels.

  • Collaborative working style and ability to develop/sustain productive work relationships with key stakeholders and other project resources across all areas and levels of the organization.


  • Bachelors or relevant work experience as typically acquired in 2-3 years.

  • Proven practical knowledge of project management processes / techniques required.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in order to manage large complex projects (ie. number of resources, functional areas, time requirements, and the organizational experience of the subject).

  • Demonstrated ability in leading / facilitating teams required.

  • Must demonstrate a strong customer service focus in all decisions and actions.

  • Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and an ability to cultivate a network within Sutter Health to gain support from key stakeholders and gain trust and respect from senior leaders.

  • Must be detail oriented, self-directed and able to work autonomously.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including a high level of tact, diplomacy, and adaptability.

  • Develop, create and deliver presentations to all levels within the Bay Area Foundation.

  • Proficiency in spreadsheet, word processing, project management and presentation applications required, preferably the Microsoft suite.
