Caris Life Sciences Histology Technician Trainee in Phoenix, Arizona

Position Summary

The Histology Technician Trainee will utilize the knowledge necessary to assist the Histology/IHC

department with microtomy, embedding, slide preparation, and other non-high complexity (i.e., Lab

Ops-IHC) technical procedures. This position works under direct supervision and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs microtomy of patient samples while also supporting the department with all clerical and ancillary duties such as the tasks performed by the IHC-Ops team when needed.

  • Performs routine histology tasks such as embedding, cutting, cover slipping and other non-high complexity lab procedures.

  • Responsible for the successful execution of laboratory protocols and standard operating procedures and undergoes training and routine competencies for applicable tasks completed within the department.

  • Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling by routinely verifying that case identification numbers of match blocks and slides during each processing step; prints labels and/or slides as appropriate.

  • Documents in laboratory logs and the laboratory information system (LIS) as directed by standard operating procedures.

  • Maintains laboratory equipment and ensures that the equipment is in proper working order and notifies leadership if maintenance and/or repairs are needed.

  • Demonstrates capability of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of tests results and takes appropriate action.

  • Makes suggestions for the development of new protocols and standard operating procedures to address problems and improve quality and safety within the laboratory.

  • Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects to support the laboratory, as required.

  • Accepts other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma and greater than two years of experience in Histology Laboratory Operations position at Caris Life Sciences OR

  • Bachelor’s (BA or BS) and one year of experience in Histology Laboratory Operations position.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Internet for business use.

  • Conditions of Employment: Individuals must successfully complete pre-employment process, which includes criminal background check, drug screening, and reference verification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • HT/HTL (ASCP) certification.

  • Laboratory Specialist level II tasks such as Equipment Maintenance, TMA building, Bulk tissue microtomy, Beef liver grossing, etc.

  • Enthusiasm and dedication to build a career in Histology and to meeting group objectives.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and quality control procedures and regulations.

  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.

  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills. Willingness to share and receive information and ideas from all levels of the organization to achieve the desired results.

Physical Demands

  • Must possess ability to sit, stand, and/or work at a computer for long periods of time.

  • May have exposure to blood-borne pathogens, extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes and bio-hazardous material/chemical including formalin, formaldehyde, xylene, and DAB in the lab environment.

  • Visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail. Ability to pass a visual color discrimination test.

  • Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

  • May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents.

Training

  • All job specific, safety, and compliance training are assigned based on the job functions associated with this employee.

Other

  • This position may require periodic travel and some evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
