Atlantic Health System Director, Emergency Services in Summit, New Jersey

Responsible for the administrative management of the organization's emergency department. Establishes and administers policies and procedures in cooperation with inpatient department heads and administrative personnel. Ensures effective utilization of staff and departmental resources.

Reporting directly to the Chief Nursing Officer, this position is accountable for implementing the strategic plan for care delivery systems across the Medical Center, which is fully aligned to the Network Nursing strategic plan. The Director of Emergency Services assesses, plans, implements, monitors, and evaluates nursing practice and the nursing care delivery system with direct supervision of front-line leaders and staff. This leader is responsible for executing and advancing the scope of practice, professional standards, and care delivery systems as they relate to patient care, patient satisfaction and quality outcomes for the Medical Center as well as providing direction and oversight for the business operations and fiscal management of the Emergency Departments and Pediatric division.

The successful candidate will be a visible, outstanding communicator, able to build relationships across a diverse organization, respectful of others, make challenging decisions and enhance the operations of the organization. Skills include a highly creative leader who can eliminate unnecessary waste, while ensuring the team is supported in their efforts to deliver safe, effective, high-quality care. A proven history of success collaborating closely with physicians to improve operations and profitability is expected.

Job Responsibilities

Includes, but is not limited to:

  • Maintains authority and accountability for the 24-hour management, administration, and organizational development of the Emergency Departments and Pediatric division.

  • Participates in the implementation of the Medical Center’s strategic plan, performance improvement programs, Human Resources programs, and annual operating budget, plans, goals, and objectives

  • Demonstrates a clear vision that supports AHS’s vision, mission and shared values; foresees challenges and opportunities; generates break through ideas through innovation.

  • Plans, organizes, and provides administrative oversight of assigned patient care units and/or departments.

  • Ensures attainment of clinical, service, financial, and growth parameters for assigned patient care units/departments.

  • Monitors nursing standards of practice, policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines to ensure compliance with internal and external regulatory agencies.

  • Provides effective clinical leadership, to ensure clinical metrics are identified, tracked and that clinical benchmarks are met for supervising departments.

  • Has a strong understanding of EMS and community outreach as well as Emergency Department operations to improve access, growth, throughput, and quality.

  • Provides the leadership support and resources to ensure a talent pipeline for succession planning and ensures professional development opportunities for team members.

  • Responds to patients and families, as necessary. Acts as a patient advocate and maintains privacy and confidentiality of all appropriate information.

  • Serves as a liaison to bed management and helps to drive decreasing throughput times.

  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Nurse Managers, Assistant Nurse Managers, Clinical educators, nurses, patient care technicians, unit secretaries.

    Minimum Education and/or Experience Requirements

  • A Bachelors (BA/BS/BSN) and Masters (MA/MS/MSN/MBA/MPA) degree are required. One degree must be in nursing.

  • PhD or DNP preferred.

  • 5 or more years of experience in a progressive nursing leadership position.

  • Excellent oral/written communication skills.

  • Must possess strong process improvement and financial management expertise.

    Required Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations

  • BLS, ACLS, PALS

  • NJ Nursing License

  • Professional certification (must obtain within 1 year of hire)

    Quality

    Assures that implementation of standards of professional practice occurs, reviewing and revising according to policy or as necessary to reflect changes in practice and to ensure safe, effective, and efficient patient care.

    Develop with our physician colleagues, a system wide quality review program.

    Ensures compliance with local, state, federal rules and regulations and OSHA and TJC standards.

    Consistently, with others, evaluates core processes for redesign opportunities to improve operations, reduce cost, reduce cycle time, enhance services, and improve performance.

    Physicians

    Promotes and maintains harmonious and effective relationships with physicians.

Education:
